Hauntingly Gorgeous York
Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, the historic walled city of York in England has seen its fair share of drama. The city has endured Viking invasions, the English Civil War and the Norman Conquest. With such a bloody and brutal history, no wonder York has been named the most haunted city in Europe by the International Ghost Research Foundation!
I’ve been to York a few times but didn’t know about its hauntings until I went for a special Halloween dinner at Betty’s, a charming tearoom and bakery. A historian told us the stories behind ghost sightings in various graveyards, old mansions and pubs whilst we chowed down on a three-course English roast dinner. Similarly, you can go on a Ghost Walk tour to learn more about the spooky history of York. Apparently there are more than 500 ghost sightings in the city so you will hear a bunch of fascinating stories!
If ghosts aren’t your thing, fear not, York has so much to offer everyone – charming pubs, a breathtakingly gorgeous cathedral (York Minster), museums, castles, the Jorvik Viking Center and historic streets and buildings. One of the best things about York is just how accessible it is for travelers. You don’t need to rent a car to get to it and you don’t have to risk driving in an unfamiliar area (especially if you’re from another country). York is just a two-hour train journey from London and once you get there, it’s very easy to walk around the city.
Upcoming Fall Events
Illuminating York
Using digital art illuminated on historical buildings, artists showcase their work on unique canvases. I especially love the works that combine music and motion picture to tell a story. The event occurs on the last weekend in October so you will see lots of people dressed up in Halloween costumes as well!
York Maze
Unique to the UK, bonfire night occurs on November 5 every year and it’s a night of rousing fun to “roast” York’s most infamous resident, Guy Fawkes. There will be a giant bonfire, fireworks, pyro-juggling, live music, yummy hot food and side stalls.
Where to Stay:
Churchill Hotel
This historic late Georgian mansion came highly recommended by my English friends who stayed there for their wedding. For special occasions, book the Prince of Wales suite, named after the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) who stayed in this room on a visit to York in 1898.
